NORTH HARPSWELL - Lila A. Skolfield, 95, of Merrucoonegan Farm, died Saturday at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick.
She was born Jan. 31,1900, in Lewiston, the daughter of Alton D. and Lila Johnson Allen. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1918, attended Farmington Normal School from 1918-1920, and received a Bachelor of Arts
degree from Gorham State Teachers College. She later took courses at Bates College, Harvard University, Boston University, the University of Maine and Colby College. She was issued a life teacher's certificate in 1920.
On June 10,1925, she married George R. Skolfield in Lewiston. He died
Jan. 12, 1970. She began teaching in Bristol, Conn., in 1920, and taught immigrants there. She returned to Auburn, where she taught from 1920-1925. She moved to Brunswick where she taught English and social studies from 1925-1970. She taught at Wheeler Hall, Longfellow School, was principal of Hawthorne School, and taught at Brunswick Junior High School. She initiated the English fundamentals program at Brunswick High School. She also taught at St.
John's School in Brunswick from 1970-1984. Mrs. Skolfield was a member and past president of Beta Chapter, Delta
Kappa Gamma, past president of the Elementary Principal's Association, past president of the Maine Elementary Teacher's Association, member of the Maine Teacher's Association, member and former chairwoman of the Resolutions Committee of the National Education Association, and member of the Brunswick Teacher's Association. She was a former officer in the
Rebekah's, past president of the Harpswell Garden Club, member of Merriconeag Grange and First Parish Church. She enjoyed and had taught square dancing and recently enjoyed playing bridge at 55 plus in Brunswick. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara S. Barton of North Harpswell; a
sister, Beulah L. Allen of Auburn; two granddaughters, Linda-Lee Barton and Nancy-Ann Barton Dietlin, both of North Harpswell; a great-granddaughter, and a great-grandson. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Parish Church, Brunswick, with the Rev. Dr. William C. Imes officiating. Spring burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Skolfield-Tonon Scholarship Fund, care of St. John's.
