Husband of Doris Wilson. Son of John Robert Allen and Edith Taylor

Des Moines, Iowa
Monday, August 14, 2006

John J. Allen was born on July 1, 1920 to John R. and Edith (Taylor) Allen, in Warren Township, Lucas County, Iowa. John died on August 11, 2006. Graveside services will be held at the Chariton Cemetery on Saturday, August 19, at 11 a.m.

As a boy, John moved from the country with his family to Chariton, Iowa where he spent most of his life. In December, 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and in August, 1942 was sent to England where he served with the Eighth Bomber Command until World War II ended.

During this time he met and married Doris Wilson on July 15, 1944 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. John worked for the Lucas County Engineer's Department for five years and then transferred to the Iowa Department of Transportation as a highway inspector for twenty-eight years. He retired in 1982.

John was a faithful member of the Chariton Christian Church for many years. He served at different times as Scoutmaster for the Chariton Christian Church and the Chariton Methodist Church. Upon moving to Des Moines in his later years, he became a member of St. John's Methodist Church.

John is survived by his wife, Doris; his daughters, Diane Barten, Suzanne Booth, Carol (John) Tschudy; grandsons, Mark and Matthew Barten, Jason and David Tschudy; granddaughters, Kerry Walker and Kristie Bevington; great-granddaughters, Stephanie, Morgan, Shelby, Deven and Victoria; and sisters, Louise Anderson of Indianola and Juanita McKeever of Batavia.

John was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he will be greatly missed. Life is eternal and love is immortal, and death is only a horizon and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.
