THE CHARITON LEADER
Tuesday, May 18, 2004
Dorothy Allen passed away May 9, 2004. She was born in Lucas, Iowa, July 12, 1912, to Thomas and Annie (Pasco) Halls, whose parents were Welsh immigrants who came to Lucas for work in the coal mines that once flourished in the area. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Keith H. Allen, who passed away in 1975; a brother Raymond Halls; and her sister Helen A. Baker.
She married Keith H. Allen June 12, 1938 at Russell, Iowa, in a double ceremony with their friends Everett Price and LaVonne Larson.
Dorothy is survived by two sons: Thomas J. Allen of Chariton and Larry Dean Allen of Canon City, Colo. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Charles (Chaz) Allen, Melinda Miller and Keith Allen, children of Thomas J. and Miki Allen; and grandchildren Lindsey Allen, Brian Allen and Paige Allen, children of Larry Allen; as well as two great-granddaughters: Morgan and Madeline Allen, the children of Charles and Terri Allen of Newton.
Following her graduation from Lucas High School in May 1929, Dorothy worked at the Warner and Baker Store and the Farmer's and Miner's Bank in Lucas, until 1941, when she went to work at Younkers Department Store in Des Moines, as a department manager. She and her close friend, Lenore DeVore opened the Mode O'Day clothing store in Chariton in 1961. Later, she opened D'Allen's Fashions and continued in the women's clothing business until 1995. At that time, she was in partnership with her son, Thomas Allen in the store in Chariton and another store in Albia, Iowa.
For a number of years, following her husband's death, she continued to operate his business, the "Keith H. Allen Tire Supply," in additon to her own business. She was one of the longest operating business owners on the Chariton town square. She loved her family and hard work.
Although she will be missed by all who knew and loved her, she led a rich and full life and was a friend to all who knew her. A memorial fund has been established in her memory for the benefit of the John L. Lewis Museum in Lucas, Iowa.
A graveside service was held for Dorothy May 22, 2004, at the Chariton Cemetery, with Pastor Tony Pulatie officiating. Fielding Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
