Glenn Walker Allen, 93, of Madrid, died of a heart ailment, Friday, July 14, 2000 at the Madrid Home. Services were held Monday, July 17th. He was born in Lucas, Iowa, Sept. 27, 1906 to Walker and Carrie Allen.
He spent his formative years in Lucas and graduated from Lucas High School in 1925. Glenn was a standout basketball player at Lucas and played for the American Institute of Business in Des Moines while attending classes there. He also attended Parsons College at Fairfield, Iowa.
On March 4, 1932, he was united in marriage to Jeannette Charles of Fairfield. The couple had four children while living in Iowa, where Glenn made his living as the owner/operator of a truck. Glenn and his brother, Roy also ran a flourishing livestock operation near Lucas.
In 1955, the couple and their youngest daughter moved to Colorado. Glenn worked for a short time with a general contractor and then took a position with Colorado's Port of Entry Division, where he worked until he retired in 1976.
In 1980, Glenn and Jeannette returned to Iowa, where they resided in Huxley. After several short stays, Glenn moved to the Madrid Home permanently in 1995, where he was living at the time of his death.
Glenn was an avid singer and loved to pass the time by playing cards with his family and friends. He was also a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church and a member in good standing of the Masonic Lodge.
Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette; his parents, Walker and Carrie, his brothers, Roy, Claude and Keith; his three sisters, Edna, Lois and an unnamed infant sister, as well as his son-in-law, Marvin Mutschler.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his two sons, Irvin of Huxley and Charles of Ankeny; his two daughters, Glenna Jean Mutschler of Iowa Falls and Ellen Allen of Camarillo, Calif.; his two daughters-in-law; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, July 17, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, presided over by the Rev. Carla Werre, the Madrid Home chaplain. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home of Slater.
