JOHN R. ALLEN

This community was greatly shocked to learn of the death of John R. Allen, which occurred at his home in Skaneateles Saturday evening shortly after seven o'clock, of neuralgia of the heart. Mr. Allen had been usually well and had been in Syracuse that day on business. He was seated in his library when he was stricken. Though medical aid was summoned he soon passed away without apparent suffering.

Mr Allen was a son of Augustus Allen, an early resident of this town, and was for years one of our most prominent business men, first in carriage manufacturing, later as merchant, then a partner in the marble and granite works of Sherman & Allen, which did a most extensive business throughout Northern New York. Later he engaged in the same business by himself, and eight years ago removed to Skaneateles, where he manufactured the Sinclair Allen chair and did a most extensive business.

Funeral services were held in Skaneateles Tuesday, and the remains were brough here to the residence of his brther-in-law, M.J. Salisbury, on Wednesday, funeral services were held at the Congregational church that afternoon. Rev. T.T Davies officiating. This service and the burial were with Masonic honors.

Mr. Allen served this town for several years as supervisor. He was also from 1888 to 1901 inclusive, president of the S.C.R.O. & B. Agricultural society, taking a great deal of interest in its affairs. He was postmaster and an active member for several years on the board of education, and served as president and trustee of the village. As an active businessman he was one of the most progressive citizens of Sandy Creek and one our largest real estate owners, for many years building and improving many of the residences which today grace our pleasant village.

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, one son, A.J. Allen, who was associated with him in his business, and one daughter, Miss Edna J. Allen of Boston, Mass.; who have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

The interment was in Woodlawn. The casket was of solid mahogany and the bearers were his farmer associates and brother Masons. They were Dr J.J. Baldwin, H. Louis Wallace, C.W. Colony, J.S. DeMott, P.G. Hydorn and C.G. Thomas. There were a large number of handsome floral tributes.
