Austin was working for an oil company on Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela, South America when he died.
His body could not be recovered because of the war so he was buried in the Northeast corner of the Lago Petroleum Company Cemetery, Maracaibo, Venezuela, South America.
He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.
