Hamblin Roger Allaben [1892-1981]
Hamblin Roger Allaben, "Hammie" came into ownership of the remainer ofhis father's farm in Hancock Co. about the time his mother died. He was a photographer and recorded the early 20th century culture of his youth. These photos and his extensive civil war collections are in the town library of Traer, Ia. where he resided and had his later photo studio as well as another farm. While he was in France in W.W. I, his parents were erroneously notified that he had been killed.
According to his gravemarker at Amsterdam cemetary he was a corporal in WW I in Co. F 212 Engineer 12 Division. The following obituary was on the back of the funeral services card:
H.R. Allaben was born on March 6, 1892, at Goodell, Iowa, son of William and Vinnie (Redmond) Allaben. Ham received his education and graduated from Goodell High School. Ham was the first photographer in Wright and Hancock counties, traveling on his motor cycle taking pictures. He continued this occupation after serving his country during WW I and afterliving at Hibbing, Minn. for a short time he moved to Traer in 1923. Ham opened a photography shop on Main street Traer which he operated as well as being active in community affairs. Ham served as a trustee of theTraer Municipal Utilities for nearly 30 years and was still listed as an honorary trustee at the time of his death. He was also active in the American Legion Post and served as the rental superintendent of the Legion Housing project for many years in Traer. He was also a charter member of Hesperia Lodge No. 340 AF & AM in Traer and served as a District Lecturer in the area for many years. In more recent years Ham had resided at
Sunrise Hill Care Center at Traer where he died on Friday, Oct. 9, 1981, at the age of 89 years.
