ALCUS E. ALFORD
Franklinton, Washington Parish, LA—January 1951
A.E. Alford, Chief of Police at Port Gibson [Claiborne Co.], Miss., and a former resident of Mt. Hermon, was fatally shot about midnight last Saturday while attempting to make an arrest.
Alford answered a call from Mrs. Dan Williams for assistance in getting into her home, where her husband refused her entrance. When Alford and his deputy, Lonnie Mason, arrived, they found the door locked, and when they finally opened the door Williams shot Alford in the right arm. Mason overpowered Williams before he could do further damage. Alford was rushed to a Vicksburg hospital but died shortly after arrival.
Survivors besides his wife, the former Ella Mae Simmons of Mt. Hermon, include two sons, William Carey and Weldell Oliver, both of Port Gibson; two sisters, Mrs. Edgar Bickham of Mt. Hermon and Mrs. Charles Knight of Baton Rouge; one brother, Tolbert of California and his father, Esco Alford of Mt. Hermon.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon in Port Gibson with interment in the cemetery there.
