Darwin Elbridge Alford was born on October 8, 1849 in Denmark, Lewis County, New York, the fourth child and only son of Albert Alford and Julia Anna Alford (nee DeLawyer). In the 1850 U.S. census, taken on August 6th, Darwin is listed as one year old in his family consisting of his parents, Albert (age 32) and Julia (age 30), and his sisters Anna Marie (age 9), Rhua Anna (age 5), and Eliza Jane (age 3). A fourth sister, Laura (or Louisa), was born in October 1851. In the 1850s the Alford family left New York and moved to Iowa. Sadly, Darwin's father, Albert Alford, died sometime prior to the 1860 U.S. census when the Alford family was residing in Millville, Clayton County, Iowa. In November 1860 Albert's mother, Julia, married William H. Craig as her second husband.
In about 1871 Darwin Alford married Adaline E. Illingworth, the daughter of Montgomery David Illingworth and Lany Mary Illingworth (nee Nellis). Darwin and Adaline had two children, both sons, Wilder Montgomery Alford in October 1872 and Albert E. Alford in March 1874, both born in Cambridge, Story County, Iowa. In 1883 the Alford family moved to Superior, Nuckolls County, Nebraska. Four years later, in 1887, the Alford family moved to Cody, where Darwin had a homestead, near the Clay-Nuckolls county line. The Alford family was residing in Cody when the Blizzard of 1888 struck. On the 100th birthday of youngest son Albert E. Alford in 1974 he recalled, "We lived in a log house and had to keep the mules in the house during the blizzard to keep them from freezing." Sometime between 1888 and 1900 the Alford family moved to Rubens in Jewell County, Kansas, which was located approximately 10 miles south of Superior, Nebraska.
By the 1900 U.S. census the Alford family had moved back to the Superior, Nebraska area and where still residing there in the 1910 U.S. census. In November 1913 Darwin Alford was tragically killed in a hunting accident in Story county, Iowa, while visiting with relatives. In discussing his father's death in 1974 son Albert recalled, "His double-barrel shotgun discharged while he was holding it in his lap [when] the buggy in which he was riding hit a big hole."
Darwin Alford was buried in Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, Story County, Iowa. His wife Adaline died in 1924 and is buried in the same cemetery.
