Our dear "Poppa Joe" Joseph Francis Alexandre went to rest on May 27, 2004, at the age of 67, surrounded by his family.
Poppa Joe was born on the island of Terceira, in the Azores on May 14, 1937. He came to Ferndale in 1951 to live with Tony and Mary Marshall on their dairy farm in Grizzly Bluff. In 1961, he and his wife, Loretta, purchased the dairy and were there until his retirement. During this time, Joe and Loretta hosted many parties for family and friends. Joe loved a good party! He was the founding partner of Poppa Joe's restaurant on Main Street in Ferndale. He spent many happy hours at Poppa Joe's, playing pedro and shaking dice with his friends.
He was a 30-year board member of the Humboldt Creamery Association, and a member and past president of the Ferndale Rotary Club. For many years, he has been the president of the Portuguese Hall Association of Eel River Valley. Joe was the host and instigator of many social events - again, he loved a good party! Joe was always willing to financially support anything that people asked of him.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Loretta; special aunt, Mary Marshall; children, Renae Alameda and Rick Fielder, Blake and Stephanie Alexandre, and Kristina and David Lewis; dear friends, Ken Mendes and Lloyd Pareira; grandchildren, Justin, Makenzie, Hunter, Joseph, Christian, Vanessa, Dalton and Savanna; mother-in-law, Mary "Nammie"; sisters, Diamentina Aguiar, Mary JoAn and Bob Vess, Mary Lou and Del Moore; sister-in-law, Diana Rocha; brother-in-law, David and Sandy Trutalli; stepfather, John Rocha; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Francisco Alexandre; mother, Eva Rocha; special uncle, Tony Marshall; brother, Alfred Rocha; brother-in-law, America Aguiar; and grandson, Jace Joseph Alameda.
