WILLIAM ALEXANDER OBITUARY, Palestine Newspaper Dec. 1940
William Alexander, son of Dr. Harmon and Jeretta (Wilson) Alexander, was born in Palestine ILL. April 22, 1858. He was united in marriage with Maggie Lanham December 24, 1879. To this union were born four children, two of whom, and the mother, surviving. The surviving children are Frank W., of Kansas City and Ray, of Norman Oklahoma. The oldest son, Clifford, died many years ago leaving one son, Clifford Jr., of Detroit, Michigan. Bessie died about the year of 1914.
Mr. Alexander was a well informed man, and was cashier of the old Palestine Bank for eleven years. The Palestine Bank was ???? and owned by the late ?????n Fife and was the predecessor of the present Farmers State Bank. Mr. Alexander also was secretary of the Palestine Building & Loan Association for a number of years. He served as postmaster and in young manhood was in the grocery business in Palestine.
The deceased was of a quiet, cheerful disposition, never complaining of his surroundings. In recent years he spent much time reading and was well informed on national and international affairs. He had an exceptionally good memory.
After the death of his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Eaton, which occurred in Robinson in April 1930, he came to the Buchanan home in Palestine where he resided for more than ten and one half years, winning close friendships of those around him and showing appreciation for the kindness of his friends during his illness. He was seized with his final illness October 18, 1940 and died December 21, 1940 , at the age of 82 years seven months and 28 days.
Funeral services were held at Goodwine & Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine under the ministry of Rev. Thomas L. Henry Tuesday December 24. Burial was in the Palestine cemetery.
