Alexander founded W.A. Alexander and Company. It was a very successful insurance company in Chicago. His summer house was in Highland Park, IL, and was designed in a neoclassical style reminiscent of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

In 1902, Alexander and former Chicago Mayor Hempstead Washburn proposed to build a new subway system for Chicago valued at $40 million.(See NYTimes, "Chicago Subway Proposal" 7/17/1902).

Look for his wife's grave under the name Maude Alexander Foote. Her full name may have been Maud(e) Julia Greene Alexander Foote.
