PIONEER RESIDENT DIES HERE FRIDAY


Bridgeport was saddened when one of its oldest and best loved citizens, J. R. Alexander Sr., passed away last Friday.

Mr. Alexander had been a citizen of Bridgeport for the past 58 years. He came to Texas from Springfield, Missouri in an ox wagon when a lad of 12 years old. He came to Bridgeport in 1898.

A long time druggist, civic and educational leader, he served 20 years on the local Board of Education. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of 55 years.

James Robinson Alexander, Sr., affectionately known as "Uncle Jim," was born in Booneville, Arkansas, March 1863. He passed away here at the local hospital Friday, March 9, living 92 years, 11 months and 20 days.

Mr. Alexander was united in marriage to Cora Cordelia Sheppard, June 5, 1887. He is survived by Mrs. Alexander, five sons, and two daughters: E. R. Alexander, College Station; C. L. Alexander, Fort Smith, Arkansas; H. B. Alexander, Fort Worth; O. L. Alexander, Bridgeport; J. R. Alexander Jr., Galena Park; Miss Vera Alexander, Greeley Colorado; and Mrs. B. A. Green, Galveston. Other survivors include 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; two brothers J. D. Alexander, Oklahoma City and J. G., Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.

Funeral services were held for Mr. Alexander at the First Baptist Church Saturday, March 10, with Rev. Ed Stewart, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Clinton Kersey and Mr. Van Frank Jr.

Acting pallbearers were Gus Funk, Lee Mott, Lloyd Green, Hardin Bingham, Ike Hartsell, and Alvin Holt.

Interment was in East Side cemetery under arrangements of Hawkins Funeral Home.
