Hit-and-run victim recalled as 'backbone' of family

By Jeff Lehr
Globe Staff Writer

Scores of friends and acquaintances of Jamison Alexander, a Joplin High School senior who died of injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run incident on Jan. 17, showed up at his family's visitation Wednesday to mourn his passing.

Alexander's aunt, Fontella Stewart, of Parsons, Kan., earlier in the day described her nephew as an ambitious and intelligent young man who had been a primary support to his mother, Denise Brooks, and three younger siblings, Jocelyn, 17, Jeremy, 16, and Jaron, 14.

"He looked after his siblings and mother," Stewart said. "He was their backbone, basically."

She said Brooks and her children are devastated by what happened and struggling to cope with their loss.

"You can see by the turnout how well he was thought of," said Jan Crandon, a Memorial Middle School teacher who attended the visitation at the Joplin Family Worship Center.

Crandon had Alexander in a couple of her classes a few years ago and has his brother Jaron in her class this year.

Many of the teenagers and adults who showed up at the visitation Wednesday afternoon at the church in preparation for Alexander's funeral today expressed sorrow and dismay with the circumstances surrounding the death of a young man they liked and admired.

"They're all such good kids, polite and cooperative," Crandon said of Alexander and his three siblings. "It's just awful this happened."
