Rushville Republican
August 2, 2010

Mary Carolyn (Clarkson Kinder Hartman) Alexander, 84, of Rush County, died Saturday, July 31, 2010, marking an end to what she described as a blessed life.

She was born April 21, 1926 in Rush County to Dorothy V. (Whitaker) and Harold L. Clarkson. Mary Carolyn was married to Russell L. Kinder from Dec. 8, 1946, until his death in 1982. That marriage produced three children, Mark R. (Reba) Kinder of Clarkshill, David H. (Ruth) Kinder of Elida, Ohio and Mary Jayne (Brad) Apple of Rushville. She has five grandchildren, Sarah (Douglas) McDonald, Jessica Kinder, Brendan Kinder, Trevor Apple and Neil Apple. Also surviving are brother, C. Jack Clarkson (and wife, Linda) of Rushville.

In 1989, Mary Carolyn married Cecil Hartman, who died in February 1998.

In 2003 she married Joseph Alexander, who survives.

During her lifetime, Mary Carolyn was pianist for First Baptist Church, beginning when she was 8 years of age playing for the evening service. At 14, she began playing for the regular morning service, and continued as the principle pianist until the fall of 2009. All together, Mary Carolyn played piano for over 75 years in service to God. There are many in this town and elsewhere who have had the pleasure to have had Mary Carolyn play for their wedding, as she was always willing to give of her time for those occasions. In her early years, beginning at age 14, Mary Carolyn worked as a Linotype operator for the Rushville Republican. She continued to work there through high school, and until her first marriage. She was elected to the office of Rush County Recorder in 1982; swearing in 1983, she served two terms. Her first election garnered her the highest vote tally in the county for that year's election. During her later years, Mary Carolyn was also able to contribute missionary work to Belarus. Monies she helped raise contributed to the construction of a church there. Trips in 2001 and 2002 to visit with the growing congregation were highlights of her mission work to that country. Mary Carolyn was a woman of strong faith in God. For many years she lead a Bible study class in her home. She reached out to others through her faith. As a result, many have found the Lord through her.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Life service will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Jay Noll and Pastor Ray Sweet III officiating.

Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Shriners Children's Hospital, First Baptist Church or American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Moster Mortuary, Rushville.
