He bravely faced a long illness, never forgetting his family and always demonstrating the dry humor and quiet dignity for which he was well known.
HB was born on August 2, 1927 in Port Republic, Rockingham County, VA.
He is predeceased by his parents, Reverend Homer Byerle and Minnie Bowman Alexander; he is also predeceased by his brother, Robert Bowman Alexander, DDS; his half-brother, Gordon W Alexander; and his half-sister, Pauline Byerly Alexander Melton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Doris Pearl Alexander; his daughter, Lucinda A. Toney; his granddaughters, Kimberly T. Needles and Susan T. Lessar; and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Rebecca Wood of Salem, VA, and his brother, Joseph Alexander, DDS, of Petersburg, WV.
HB attended Port Republic High School and graduated early after the attack on Pearl Harbor; he then joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17 years in fact, his parents had to approve his enlistment with the Merchant Marines due to his young age. While in the Merchant Marines during World War II, he worked mainly on oil tankers, crossing the Atlantic Ocean many times and taking much needed supplies and troops to England for the allied war effort.
After many years in the Merchant Marines, he left the service and started the first of two careers with Fairmont Foods, initially based in Harrisonburg and later transferred to Winchester; he worked for Fairmont Foods for 28 years, retiring in 1975.
He then purchased Toney's Supermarket on Jackson Street in Front Royal, Virginia, serving as the owner and operator from 1975 to 1990.
HB and Doris were married in 1949 at the Port Republic Methodist Church. After their marriage, HB and his wife, Doris lived for several years in Port Republic. They then moved to Winchester in 1955 with his Fairmont Foods transfer. In 1962, HB and Doris purchased Carter Hall in Stephens City, VA. Over the next many years, they worked together, restoring the 1820 mansion to its previous glory.
HB was a very generous, extremely hard-working man; he believed in personal responsibility, yet he was always willing and eager to help a friend or family member. He was happiest at home with his family, hosting friends and relatives for large, wonderful dinners, prepared by Doris and him. He was active in his community and attended the Stephens City Methodist Church.
HB will, of course, be missed but he will be loved forever by his wife, daughter, and the rest of his family. His legacy of family love, personal responsibility, and quiet dignity will continue on in his daughter, granddaughters, and many grandchildren for many generations to come.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of HB's life at their home on Wednesday, August 13th from 5pm 8pm. Contact Jones Funeral home for directions to Carter Hall. A church service will be held on August 14th at the Port Republic Methodist Church at 1pm. He will be laid to rest at the Port Republic Cemetery following the church service.
