E. G. "Dad" Aldrich was a veteran locomotive engineer on the Virginian Railroad. He and his fireman, Frank O'Neal, were killed in a head-on collision at Ingleside, West Virginia. The wreck and it's victims were memorialized in song by the old-time West Virginia county musician, Blind Alfred Reed in 1927 as "The Wreck of the Virginian".

(Sources: Bluefield "Daily Telegraph" 26 May 1927 - West Virginia Culture website; US DOT website "Historic Railroad Wreck Investigations"; US Census Records; photograph of tombstone - birth date; "The Wreck of the Virginian" may be heard on You-Tube - it was originally recorded in 1927 and was re-released in 1998 on a CD of the combined recorded works of Alfred Reed.)
