Birth: 1937
Death: Mar. 21, 2005

Neighbors called John the 'Mayor of McMillan Road.' "He was so friendly and outgoing and funny," said his wife, Judith Diebolt. "He knew everybody on the block. Everybody loved him. Our house was the scene of many an impromptu party organized by John -- unbeknownst to me." Known for his dry sense of humor, he created a tongue-in-cheek refuge in his garage for his male neighbors, calling it the 'Us Guys' club -- and warned 'no girls allowed.' "They'd sit on old lawn chairs, have cocktails and watch sports on a black-and-white TV set with aluminum foil on the antenna," his wife recalled. His sense of humor helped him shoulder his battle against cancer with great courage and grace. "Despite all the health problems he faced over the past six years -- and there were many, including a diagnosis of terminal cancer three months ago -- he never once said 'Why me?'" his wife said. He was proud of his service in Army intelligence. He tracked the Soviet space program and, in 1957, plotted the Sputnik satellite as it flew over Turkey, where he was stationed. But his family was his greatest joy. "John said his legacy would be his five children, who became such wonderful adults," his wife said. A retired insurance agent, he died of cancer in his Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, home. He is survived by his wife, and also by three daughters, Dawn Swinteck, Karen Woodington and Julie Martinelli; two sons, John C. and Michael; 11 grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother. He donated his body to Wayne State University for science, and was buried later at Arlington National Cemetery.
