Memorial services for Rella Lou Aldrich, 77, beloved wife of Dick Aldrich, of College Station will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21 at First Baptist Church in College Station with Dr. Malcolm Bane officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 20 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Interment will be at College Station Cemetery. Mrs. Aldrich passed away Tuesday morning at her home.
She was born in Roswell, N.M., to Harold Dolph and Ruey Mae Jeffries Danenberg. She graduated from Roswell High School and attended Texas Christian University. She was raised in the Methodist Church and was confirmed in the Episcopal Church after her marriage. She was a homemaker and has been a resident of College Station for the past 18 years, moving here from New Orleans.
Rella was a Scout Den Mother, a member of the Roswell Assistance League and the St. Andrews Episcopal Church Altar Guild Society. She was also a member the New Orleans Orchid Society.
She loved golf with a passion and played on 248 golf courses throughout the United States and the world. She was a member and past president of the Pebble Creek Country Club Ladies Golf Association, the Ladies Institute Golf Association in Roswell, the Hogan Park Ladies Golf Association in Midland, Oso Beach Ladies Golf Association in Corpus Christi, the Bayou Barrier Country Club Ladies Golf Association and Timberlake Country Club Ladies Golf Association in New Orleans and the Briarcrest Ladies Golf Association in Bryan.
Rella was a competitor and although she wanted to be club champion everywhere she played, she missed a few, but not many. She was extremely proud to be the first Pebble Creek Country Club Women's Champion.
Dick and Rella had a marriage that others wish they could have. They were best friends and truly loved each other's company, traveling many places exploring the old and taking in the new.
Rella was the consummate boy's mom. She loved all sports, routinely beating her two boys and their friends at their own games. This trait carried over into the next generation as she passed on her avid love and knowledge of the game of golf to her grandchildren.
Her wit and dry sense of humor and her ability to laugh at herself drew many to her in friendship.
One of her truest friends for the last four years was Bogey. He was a constant companion, a source of great joy and a pleasure to spoil. She was always ready to come home because Bogey was waiting.
Rella was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Ruey Danenberg; sister Dannie Weibert Kuhner; brother, Harold Danenberg; and grandson, Steven Aldrich.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Aldrich of College Station; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Mary Aldrich of Austin and Steve and Lisa Aldrich of College Station; one sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Jack Eccles of Austin; three grandchildren, Warren Aldrich, Miller Aldrich and Carson Aldrich; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Danenberg.
Honorary pallbearers will be Betty Dunn, Sookie Jané, Caroline McDonald, Carol Keblinger, Carla Knoop, Kay Adams, Jana Lane and the Leaves of TCU, Frances Bunch, Nancy White, Beverly Taylor, Dorothy Stribling, Carey Jane Taylor, Jean Gulley and Patti Roach and all her golfing girl friends throughout her life.
Rella's family would like to thank all of her caregivers, especially Ruby Jackson and Debbie McIntosh, for the love and comfort they provided her.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley and the American Cancer Society.
