Mary Ann Aldred Sample, 69, of Columbus, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.

She was born April 8, 1939, in Switzerland County, the daughter of James F. and Mae Taylor Aldred. She was a graduate of Vevay High School and attended Indiana University in Indianapolis. She was also a graduate of Indiana Central Business College. She retired in December 2000 after 35 years with the Bartholomew County School System where she was secretary to the principal. She worked at Schmidt, Rock Creek, Petersville and Clifty Schools. She was also a former employee of Indiana Bell in Indianapolis and Columbus, Southwest Bell in Temple, Texas, and Reliance Electric Co. in Columbus. She was a member of the First United Church in Columbus and was an avid bird watcher. She loved flowers and working in her garden.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn G. Sample, whom she married Sept. 10, 1960; one half sister, Bernice Morton of Madison; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, James E. Aldred; and one half sister, Marie Stegemiller.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Myers-Reed Chapel in Columbus. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Vevay Cemetery.
