He was the son of Clyde "Sam" and Louise Mitchell Alden. He married Betty Louise Fitch on November 3, 1945 in Abingdon, Illinois. She survives of Galesburg, Illinois.

Also surviving are two daughters, Sarah Presley and Linda (Denny) McKee; three grandchildren, Brett McKee, Laura Presley and Kelly McKee; sister-in-law, Lillian Fitch; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Edgar, Les and Buss.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II from August 10, 1943 until January 24, 1946 in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a motor machinist mate 3/c and received the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

He worked at Mickleberry Meat Packing in Bushnell, Illinois for 2 years. He was a shear operator at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg, Illinois for 39 years, retiring in February 1987.
