SARAH A. RHODES ALBAUGH
7-16-1854 -- 8-2-1895
Sarah A., wife of Jonathan Albaugh, was born July 16th, 1854, and died at her home in Hickory township, Forest Co., Pa., on August 2nd, 1895.
Mrs. Albaugh had been a patient sufferer for several months. On Wednesday of last week Drs. Bowman, Siggins and Morrow of Tionesta, performed an operation and successfully removed several tumors. She rallied very nicely from the severe shock, and the family were much elated over the prospects of a speedy recovery. Near midnight of Thursday following she awoke from an apparently quiet slumber, and symptoms of a serious nature were readily detected. A physician was promptly summoned, but it was too late. At 1:30 AM Friday, she passed from among the sorrow stricken family and friends. After death it was shown to the satisfaction of the family that death did not result from the operation, but was caused by the breaking of an abscess in the chest, of which no one had previous knowledge, and on account of its peculiar location, any knowledge of the fact could have availed nothing. She was beyond the power of human aid.
Mrs. Albaugh is survived by the husband and three daughters, the elder married and living near the family homestead and the other two aged 10 and 12 years respectively.
Funeral services were conducted at the house and at the cemetery on Saturday afternoon last, by Revs. Dale of Tionesta and Whippo of Hickory, a detail for Eli Berlin Post, G. A. R., in uniform acting as pall bearers. The services at the grave were most impressive; as the casket was lowered within the walls of a chilly tomb the gloom was in a measure dispelled by the loving act of the lady friends of the family, who cast beautiful flowers upon the casket that contained all that was mortal of the affectionate wife and mother. This demonstration of pure love and devotion was most touching and showed a tenderness of regard for those who mourn that will never be erased from their memory. The funeral concourse was very large and sympathetic. May she rest in peace.
