He attended Fremont High School from September 1960 to June 1963,prior to enlisting in the Marines.
He played football and was on the wrestling and track team. He had a great smile.He liked to fish with his friends for stripped bass under the Alameda Estuary Bridge.
Arturo arrived in Vietnam 13 January 1969 for his second tour and was assigned to Bravo Company,1st Battalion,3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
He had been wounded during his previous tour of Vietnam and received the Bronze Star Medal.
Arturo died as a result of multiple fragmenta-
tion wounds penetrating his face,neck,chest,
abdomen,both legs,with traumatic amputation
of the right arm at the shoulder from a gren-
ade that discharged,while waiting in the chow
line at the mess hall,at the Vandergrift Combat
Base,10 kilometers southwest of Cam Lo.There
were four Marines that were injured.One died
later.
Arturo was single and served his country for 5
years,2 months and 19 days and was KIA
#39,125.
Dates of tour of duty unknown.
Arturo was 22 years,6 months and 4 days old.
Survived by father;Jesus Alarcon Sr living in
Mexico.
His mother;Nancy F Alarcon,a brother;Jesus Jr,
and his seven sisters;Lupe,Esther,Gloria,Sally,
Lucy,Dolores and Hopie of 3131 Courtland Ave,
Oakland,CA.
A Mass Service was offered at Old St Mary's Church,Eighth & Jefferson,at 10 am,March 26,
1969.
The Rosary was recited at 7:30 pm,at the New Colonial Chapel,2626 High St.
He was buried with full military honors 27 March 1969.
