STATESBORO -- James Edward Akins, 68, died Saturday at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after a long illness.

The retired farmer was a lifelong resident of Bulloch County. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Statesboro First Baptist Church.

Mr. Akins was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Ray V. Malecki of Savannah, and a niece, Miss Mary Anne Malecki of Glen Barnie, MD.

Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Smith-Tilman Funeral Home of Statesboro, with burial in the Eastside Cemetery.
