Today our community lost an old and Prominent Citizen
in James Nelson Akins (1826-1924)
James N. Akins planted a walnut tree in his youth; he afterwards sawed into lumber and had a headboard and bedstead made of it, on which he died.
Head married to Miss Caroline Francis Littlejohn of this community in 1848.This Union was blessed with three boys and two girls as follows: John Thomas, Joseph N.,and James M Akins. Mrs James W. Willis, Mrs Frankie A. Ethridge, the last two of Milner, GA.
The only living son James lives in Texas.
In 1866 James N.Akins joined High Shoals Primitive Baptist Church, Monroe County, and was baptized by Elder Edmond Dumas. The Church soon ordained him a deacon. When he died he was a beloved member of Liberty Primitive Hill. After the funeral services conducted by Elder J.A. Wright and others his remains were laid to rest in County Line Cemetery, at Liberty Hill, Lamar County, Ga. on March 4, 1924. His first wife died many years ago, he was married to Miss Ellen Akins, Forest Park, Ga., who served having proven to be a faithful companion and nurse in the long period of suffering and lingering before death.
James N. Akins joined the Confederate in February of 1863, he remained in service until the end of the War.
The deceased never angered his neighbors but was always watchful of their needs. His highest joy was found in brotherly service. As a father he was unsurpassed in his love and devotion to wife and children. With a sweet voice he sang with them in days of prosperity and in times of sorrow he was as sympathetic as a child. Born on a National holiday and buried on Inauguration Day, he was typical of a blessed Bson of the nation. Simple in habits and plain in manner, he was loved by all who knew him. Can any man have a richer heritage to leave his children and friends than a simple good life.
He rests from his labors and his works do follow him.
