It is unknown where Shannon was born. There have been family stories that his father (name unknown) died in County Clare Ireland and that afterward, Shannon, his mother and three brothers came to the United States. There is also family lore that he was born in Kentucky, possibly around Louisville. Interestingly, in the 1810 US Census, there is a Garland Akin listed as head of household in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Shannon's first born son was named Garland.

Shannon arrived in Missouri in 1834.

"The small town of Akinsville in Morgan County, Missouri, was named for Shannon Akin, who was the owner of the land on which the town was built. It was located in the northeast corner of the county, near the Moniteau Co. line. It was 2 1/2 miles west of Fortuna, Missouri." (--The State of Mo., in 1904", p. 457.)

Also named for Shannon Akin was Akinsville School which was located in Mill Creek Township, one-half mile northeast of Akinsville. Again Reverend Shannon Akin owned the land on which the school was located.

Shannon married Kitturah Durnang on June 23, 1836. Their children were
Sarah Ann,
Garland,
Elizabeth,
Katherine,
John F.
Nancy Jane,
Alfred Bethel,
Mary Elizabeth,
Porter Davis, and
Russell David.

Shannon became a widower in 1873, after 37 years of marriage.

On June 2, 1874, he married Nancy Fisher.
