Obituary from Orville Mercury Register on June 12, 1928, p.1,; In part it
reads, Earl Akes, 34, a native of Iowa, died last night at Jacks Ranch, his
home, near Oroville Junction where he had resided the past eleven years. His
death terminated a lingering illness. He was born in Iowa on Jan. 11, 1894,
and had been in California the past twelve years. He was a member of the
Congregational Church of Oroville. Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Lucille Akes,
the mother, Mrs. Ola Akes of Leon, Iowa, who has been here the past five
months, and a brother, Robert Akes, also of Leon.
Obituary from Ilene Umphress of Des Moines, Iowa in 1991, probable from the
Leon paper, as it is from page 26 of the scrap book of Ethel Umphress. In part
it reads, On January 11, 1915, he was married to Lucille Darr at Rapid City,
South Dakota. His wife and mother were constantly at his bed side during his
last illness, and his brother Robert was with him during the early part of his
last illness. Earl was a graduate of the Ray Auto School at Kansas City,
Missouri, and was engaged as a mechanic and Auto dealer at Stockton,
California, for a year after moving to California. Later he and his wife moved
to a ranch which he purchased near Oroville CA, and has resided there for the
past eleven years. For four years he was Deputy Field Assessor, but ill health
forced him to resign this position. Since that time he built and assembled
radios when he was able to work. He was a member of the First Congegational
Church at Oroville. It was his request that his funeral be held at the
Christian Church at Leon, where he attended Sunday School when a boy. Funeral
services were held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon. There was a very
large attendance with many beutiful floral offerings, tributes from Earl's
friends. Interment was in the Palestine cemetery west of Leon.
