DIED.

Since going to press with another page of this issue which contained a happy reference to a birth in the family of Mr. Al Akes we are compelled to record the sad occurrence of the death of their little two year daughter Glowvenia, who died at 7:30 o’clock Thursday morning. The child had been sick only a few days, but was attacked with a violent membrainous croup which snapped the slender thread of life and brought upon this family one of those sorrowful but inevitable experiences to which flesh and blood are heirs. Mrs. Akes who is confined to her bed is in a sorrowful condition to be called upon to bear this new distress. We beg the acceptance of the JOURNAL’S deepest sympathy for the bereaved family.

Glowvenia Akes, the little two year daughter or Mr. and Mrs. Al Akes died at their home in Empire City, yesterday, of membraneous croup, and was buried this morning in the Empire City cemetery. The mother of the child is dangerously ill, which makes the sorrow almost unbearable. The grief stricken parents have our earnest sympathy in their bereavement and misfortune.

CARD OF THANKS

To all those who so generously assisted us during the last illness of our little child Glowvenia we extend our sincere thanks. Al. Akes

Empire City Journal, Empire City, Kansas, 28 October 1897, Thursday, Page: 4.

NOTE:
Glowvenia was the daughter of Albert H Akes and his wife Maude Lenore (Smith) Akes.

NOTE:
Depending on the location of the paper and event, in Empire City papers, the City cemetery would be Empire City cemetery, now Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kansas. I believe Empire City became part of Galena in about 1905.

In Galena papers, the City cemetery would be Galena City cemetery, Galena. While it's possible she was actually placed in Oak Hill cemetery, she and other members of the family are also found in the Galena City cemetery.

I will leave her here until proved wrong, because obituaries were wrong in the old times, and they still are today.
