Cecelia Magdalene Akes, 81, died Thursday morning in Monterey, Calif., where she was visting her daughter. Mrs. Akes was born March 1, 1897 to Joseph and Barbara Schumacher, the youngest of 12 children. She attended grade school in East Helena, Mont., before moving with her family to North Dakota, and later to South Dakota. She lived with her parents on their farm south of Glencross until her marriage at Timberlake, S.D., June 25, 1925 to Clarence Lewis Akes. The couple farmed at Glencross until 1933 when they came west to Yakima. They had been Milton-Freewater residents since 1968. Mr. Akes died Feb. 10. Survivors include daughters Hester Crary, of Monterey, and Sarah Russell of Yakima; sons, Harold Eugene and Charles Leonard, both Milton-Freewater; sister, Phema Hesse of Dunedin, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral will be in Milton-Freewater at the St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church, Monday at 11 A.M. Interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemeter. The Rosary will be recited in the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Clarence was getting ready to take Cecilia home but the Doctor made them wait while he checked Sarah. Which he did, and then quarantined the house. Sure enough Sarah got a bad case of Scarlet Fever and then the rest of family got it. So Cecilia and Grampa Armstrong had to not only take care of all the sick people, but do all the farm chores also. He said that he and Cecilia were married on the 25th of January 1925, in the morning by the Priest, then in the afternoon, they went with his sister Chloe and her husband to be Karl McCown down to Timber Lake to the Baptist Ministers and had a double wedding performed.
