Berniece Akers - KINGSPORT

KINGSPORT — Berniece Boyd Walsh Akers, 94, of the Madison House, Kingsport, TN, formerly of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2011, in Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Charlotte Grindstaff Boyd and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Obbie Walsh and Walter Akers; two sisters, Mae Bryant and Grace Jamison; two brothers, Ernie Boyd and Elmer Boyd; and an infant nephew, Glenn Jamison.

Mrs. Akers was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Elizabethton. She loved gardening, sewing, quilting, and walking. She enjoyed and loved her family, playing bingo and spending time with people. She was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation and also worked as a care giver.

She is survived by a daughter, Glennis Walsh, Elizabethton; very special friends, Sid and Linda Davidson, Elizabethton; her friends at Madison House, Mary and Ruth; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, including a great-great-niece, June Messer, Hampton; and a neighbor and friend, Barbara Lotshaw, Elizabethton.

A Celebration of Life service for Mrs. Akers will be conducted on Thursday, February 10, 2011, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Dr. Joe Sorah officiating.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday prior to the service and at the residence of her daughter, 937 West G Street, at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Friday, February 11, 2011, in the Limestone Cove Cemetery, Unicoi County, at 11:30 AM. Active pallbearers will be Billy Ingram, William Reeves, Steve Sellers, Jonathan Sellers and Gary Harrison. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Robert C. Allen, Sid Davidson, Ray Jamison, Jerry Jamison and Norman Jamison. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 AM Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff and employees of the Madison House and the hospice staff of Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital for all the love and care shown to Mrs. Akers and her family.
