FEB. 4, 1923-JULY 30, 2008 CRYSTAL SPRING, Pa. - Allen A. Akers Sr., 85, of Hanks Road, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 4, 1923, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles W. Akers Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Kagarise Akers. He was employed by Mack Trucks for 23 years in the Material Division, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 561 of McConnellsburg, National World War II Memorial and retired UAW Local Union 171. He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Layton Akers, whom he married Dec. 16, 1946; four children, Joanne Beckstrom of Orlando, Fla., Allen Akers Jr. of Crystal Spring, Debra Starliper of Drayden, Md., and Lisa Renninger of Carlisle, Pa.; one sister, Lois McGeary of Greencastle, Pa.; four brothers, Robert Akers of Breezewood, Pa., Charles Akers of Crystal Spring, Stanley Akers of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and James Akers of Smithsburg; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at McKendree Methodist Church, Crystal Spring. Pastor George Clippinger will officiate. Burial will be in Akersville Cemetery, with full military honors by the Everett Honor Guard. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are by Akers Funeral Chapel, Saxton, Pa.
