BOONEVILLE - Columbus Eugene Akers, 88, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville after an extended illness. A native of Prentiss County, he was born Feb. 21, 1909, to the late William Pinkney and Emma Smith Akers. He was a retired farmer, a former trustee of Hill's Chapel School and a member of New Burton Baptist Church.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Russell Clouse officiating. Burial will be in the Mackey's Creek Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Winna Ree Cunningham and Martha Crow and her husband, Sylvester, all of New Site; two sons, Freddie Akers and his wife, Bettie Raye, and Jackie Akers and his wife, Zula D., all of Booneville; one sister, Lorena Akers of Booneville; four granddaughters, Janeen Pharr, Katrina Taylor, Qichelle Clark and Jacqueline Fraiser; five grandsons, Ronnie Cunningham, Mike Cunningham, Douglas Crow, Tony Crow and Sterling Akers; 16 great-grandchildren, one great great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ena Pace Akers; four brothers, Lilburn Akers, George Akers, Reed Akers and Leslie Akers; one grandson, Stephen Akers; and one son-in-law, Qthol Cunningham.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
