The son of Samuel Akerly, M.D., and Mary (Ketchum) Akerly.
His father was Post Surgeon at Fort Gansevoort (Old White Fort), in New York City.

He graduated from General Theological Seminary in New York City; and was ordained an Episcopal Priest by the Rt. Rev.
Benjamin Treadwell Onderdonk, Bishop of New York, in July of 1842.

Rev. Akerly Dead

OAKLAND, August 24óRev. Benjamin Akerly, rector emeritus of St. John's Episcopal Church, died at his home In this city shortly after midnight this morning, of old age. He was born In 1812 of Scotch-English descent and was the son of a well-known New York physician. On July 13, 1842, he was ordained to the Episcopal priesthood. From New York he went to Dunkirk, Mich., and from there to Milwaukee, where he founded St. John's Episcopal Church, the leading church of the denomination In the State of Wisconsin. He remained in Milwaukee twelve years, coming to California In 1857. He founded many missions. The Church of the Advent, St. Paul's Church of East Oakland and the Gray mission at Temescal were offshoots of St. John's.

Dr. Akerly was a Charter Member of, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Live Oak Lodge No.61, Oakland, on 23 Dec. 1859. He served as Worshipful Master of Live Oak Lodge for the years 1863, 1864, and 1865. He was also Past High Priest of the Royal Arch Chapter of Masons.
He was also a Charter Member of the California Commandery, Knights Templar.

Rev. Akerly performed the dedication of Mountain View Cemetery; and had officiated at hundreds of funerals and burials which took place in the cemetery.
