Barbara M. Aiken 1924 - 2014 Highland, NY

Mrs. Barbara M. Aiken (nee Barkman), 89, of Highland NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2014, at Wingate at Ulster Nursing Home, Highland, NY, surrounded by the love and support of her family.

Born on October 30, 1924, in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Henry and the late Edna Miller Barkman.

On January 19, 1946, she married Alexander M. Aiken, Sr., with whom she shared 53 years honoring their vows in accordance with the admiration and love they had for each other. The love of her life, Alexander Sr., passed away on February 26, 1999.

Prior to retiring, Barbara worked for the City of Springfield, MA, as a clerical employee, in both Springfield City Hall and the Springfield Municipal Hospital. After retirement, she and Alexander moved to Florida, where they enjoyed many happy years. Before moving to New York, Barbara spent several years living in Johnston County, North Carolina. Barbara was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed crocheting and reading, and most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her son, Alexander M. Jr. & Cindy Aiken, of Cincinnati, OH; two daughters, Deborah A. & Michael Elia of Garner, NC, Barbara A. & Thomas Weiner of New Paltz, NY, eleven grandchildren, Tammy Grisham of Williamsburg, OH; Alexander M. Aiken III of Menifee, CA; Spencer and Gregory Aiken both of San Diego, CA; Mark Aiken of Cincinnati, OH; Melinda Hart of Newburyport, MA; Pamela Elia of Las Vegas, NV; Mick Elia of Buzzards Bay, MA; Andrew, Kevin and Colin Weiner all of New Paltz, NY.

In addition to her husband, Alexander M. Aiken, Sr., Barbara was predeceased by two sisters, Edna Parsons, and Betsy Silansky and two brothers David and John Barkman.

Funeral services for Barbara will be celebrated on Monday, February 10, 2014; beginning at 9:00 a.m. from Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Ave. (413) 734-4508, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Longmeadow, MA. Interment will follow at Longmeadow Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call on Sunday, February 9, 2014 from 1pm to 4pm at the funeral home.
