One victim of yesterday's plane crash, which took 78 lives near Chicago, was Robert Marshall Aiken, a naval petty officer third class and native of Silver Spring, Md.
The 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Aiken of 310 Hllimoor Dr. had been on leave in Boston and was returning to duty in Nevada when the TWA Constellation crashed.
A 1958 graduate of Montgomery Blair High School, Aiken had received a four-year scholarship to George Washington University but left college after one year and joined the Navy in order to receive training in atomic physics, his father said. He was an instructor at the Defense Atomic Support Agency in Mercury, Nev., after being trained at Sandia Naval Base in Albuquerque, N.M. and was scheduled to serve two more years.
His father, who is an engineer with Army Signal Corps, said the youth had been on leave and after vacationing at home had visited a brother, Thomas, 17, who is a student at the Berklee School of Music in Boston.
Besides his parents and Thomas, the victim is survived by another brother, Gary, 18, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Blumenauer, all of Greater Washington. He was not married.
Memorial services have not yet been scheduled for the victim, who was a member of Christ Congregational Church in Silver Spring.
