ANTON AIGNER TAKES HIS OWN LIFE IN JAIL
The funeral of Anton Aigner was held last Saturday forenoon, burial being at the Rolfe cemetery. Mr. Aigner has lived most of his life in Roosevelt township, coming here with his mother and step-father, Ignatz Aigner, from Dallas county some twenty-five years ago or more. He was married to a daughter of Joseph Bartosh, to whom one child was born seven years ago, the wife and child surviving the husband. It was the ending chapter of the life and sad death of Anton, who committed suicide in Madison, Wisconsin, after his arrest last week. Sheriff Noah of Pocahontas arrived in Rolfe with the body Friday afternoon, the act having been committed a short time before the sheriff arrived at Madison. He was arrested by the chief of police himself, and on account of his crippled condition, was given a well furnished room in the ladies department in place of sending him to the city jail where all the other prisoners were. The room was lighted with electricity, but the old gas jets up on the ceiling were never taken down. Mr. Aigner in some way climbed up and turned on the gas and closed the windows, so that when the chief next visited him he was dead. Of the $3,660.00 it is alleged he took from the home of Ignatz Aigner when leaving, he had spent less than one hundred dollars and part of that for treatment in the Cook county hospital of Chicago, as a receipt in his pocket indicated. The relatives and friends of the deceased have the sympathy of the community in this sad event. It is hoped that charity and forgiveness will be in the minds of the people for we know not what may have been the prompting motive for the commission of such an avert act.
