Joseph was the son of Yugoslavian immigrant Joseph Ahlin and and Utah native Mary E. Tezak; sister of Mary Ann Ahlin. At the time of the 1930 census, the family was living in Kenilworth, Carbon County, Utah. Joseph's father was employed as a blacksmith at a coal mine.

Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 20, 1945. Records shows his father, Joseph, was deceased; his mother, Mary E. Janus, and his sister, Mary Ahlin, were living in Salt Lake City, UT.

Joseph married Ann M. Gallagher on November 17, 1956, in Alameda, California.

Joseph was preceded in death by his father (September 22, 1939, Springville, UT), his mother (December 29, 1987, Bountiful, UT), and his sister Mary (April 9, 2005, Holladay, UT).
