Robert Allwin Agee
Robert Allwin Agee, a retired major with the U.S. Air Force and long-time teacher and tutor, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Agee, a native of Mobile, resided in Magnolia Springs.
During his 16 years of service with the Air Force, he received two Distinguished Service Medals; two Meritorious Service Medals; and the Rawlings Award for Europe.
His various assignments during his military career took him to Greenland, which lead him to become a member of the Polar Bear Club, and Europe, where a stint in England fueled his passion for vintage cars.
According to his family, he had an insatiable appetite for learning, which served him well in the various teaching positions he held, as well as in his tutoring.
"We used to tease him. He always loved to go to school, loved to learn and to pass on what he had learned. This unique individual will be sorely missed by his surviving family members. His passing is a loss for our community and the loss of a dedicated teacher," said his sister, Sharon Faile of Mobile.
Agee, who had taught at Faulkner State Community College in addition to teaching ROTC at the University of Alabama, held bachelor's degrees in physics, geology, education and computer science as well as master's degrees in education and computer science. At the time of his death, he was working on his PhD.
Another of the sciences Agee enjoyed was archaeology. His sister recalled his going on archaeological digs in Mexico from which he brought back a number of pieces.
He had attended the University of South Alabama, the University of Alabama and Boston University, among others.
Agee is also survived by his mother, Constance Agee of Mobile; his wife, Mary Jane Brown Agee of Magnolia Springs; and two sons, Sean Charles Agee and Braxton Agee, both of Magnolia Springs.
Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Friday in Pine Crest Cemetery with Pine Crest Funeral Home in charge.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or a favorite hospice facility.
