Norman Agard was a veteran of the Civil War. On March 28, 1864, at age 19, he enlisted as a Private and was mustered into Company A, 32nd Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He served for 1 year and 6 months and after the surrender of the Confederate Army of the South, was mustered out on September 16, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas,

He applied for a pension for his military service on August 1, 1890 from the state of Kansas, Application # 845,874. After his death, his Widow, Marietta Ward Agard, applied for a widow's pension based on his military service, on January 9, 1911 from the state of Illinois, Application # 955,753.
