Although she had never been a Girl Scout, Alverna became leader of the first Girl Scout troop in Quakertown in 1936 and the first person to sell a box of Girl Scout cookies in the community. In 1957, she became neighborhood chairman, a troop organizer in 1961 and a troop consultant in 1969.
She was instrumental in the founding of the Bucks County Girl Scout Council and the establishment of Girl Scout Camp Tohikanee near Quakertown.
In 1986, she was honored by 400 scouts and their leaders, representing 21 Quakertown area troops, in a celebration which included the singing of a special song written for her by service specialist Joyce Stauffer.
That same year, Afflerbach was named Woman of the Year by the Quakertown Business and Professional Women's Association for her 50 years in scouting.
She also received the Thanks Badge, the highest adult honor in girl scouting, from the Freedom Valley Girl Scout Council.
A member of First United Church of Christ, Quakertown, she was honored in 1985 for her 65 years of service as a Sunday School teacher in its primary department and that of its predecessor, the First Reformed Church of Quakertown. She was the primary department superintendent for 48 years.
She was an air raid warden during World War I and a Red Cross worker during World War II. She also was a Red Cross First Aid instructor for many years.
