Alfred Adleman was born near Iuka, Kansas, the oldest son of William Augustus Adleman and Harriet Amanda Yaple. He went by the nickname of Sam. Sam met his future wife, Jessie Edna Drake, while he was working in Alva, Oklahoma. The couple were married 06 Oct 1909, and they moved to New Mexico in 1911. Sam worked as a stone mason, but he was mainly a farmer. He died of a heart attack in Denver, at the home of his wife's sister, Pearl Lebhardt, while they were visiting her.
