ADKINS, Cary Bryce Jr., of Midlothian, passed away on May 24, 2013. Born in Richmond, Va., August 20, 1946, he attended Patrick Henry Elementary School; Albert Hill Middle School; graduated from George Wythe High School, class of 1964; graduated from Virginia Tech in 1968, with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, and received his M.S. in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1971. Cary started his career at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company as a Mechanical Test Engineer on nuclear submarines. He then returned to Richmond, where he began 31 years of service with the Virginia Department of Transportation, Environmental Division, and retired as manager of the Noise Program in 2000. Following retirement, Cary was a principle consultant and office manager for a noise analysis company for nine years. In service to others, he started and coordinated the sports ministry (softball and volleyball), participated in the choir, and taught middle school Sunday School at Huguenot United Methodist Church. Cary became one of the pioneers who helped start New Life United Methodist Church. While there, Cary served as Lay Leader for four years, he started and coordinated the sports ministry (softball and volleyball), and very much enjoyed singing with the Praise Team and choir, and teaching middle school Sunday School. Other acts of service included Camp Rainbow Connection, a camp for individuals ages 16 and older with intellectual disabilities, where Cary was a camp counselor for 18 years; Richmond Emmaus; Chesterfield Jaycees. Notables include: member of the All Saints Episcopal Church Boys Choir; DJ for WUVT 90.7 at Virginia Tech; Virginia Air National Guard Reserves, SSGT, 1969 to 1975. Cary was a servant of God, a loving husband, dad and friend. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was a sports enthusiast (especially for the Hokies!) Cary enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cary Bryce Adkins Sr. and Mildred Mae Lucy Adkins; and brother, William Staples Adkins. He is survived by his wife of over 31 years, Laura Adkins; sons, Marcus and Jenny Alphin of Sonoma, Calif., and Brett Alphin and Yunmi Park of Los Angeles, Calif.; father and mother-in-law, Eli and Evelyn Casper; sister and brothers-in-law, Doreen and Don Hopper, Robert and Penny Casper, Steven and Nicole Casper and James Casper; nieces, Lindsay, Erica, Grace and Tess; nephews, Michael, Jack and Drew; and many cousins and dear friends. A celebration of Cary's life will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., New Life United Methodist Church, 900 Old Hundred Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23114. Donations may be made in his memory to New Life United Methodist Church; - Richmond Chapter; or Camp Rainbow Connection.
