Dean Ray Adkins, 65, of Dixon, departed this life at 6:50 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at the Vienna chapel of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes, with Pastor Karen Alden, of Vienna United Methodist Church, officiating. "Sweet as the Melody," "Get Down on your Knees and Pray" and "Go Rest High on that Mountain" will be played for the funeral service. Interment with full military honors will be in Red Cemetery, Meta, under the direction of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Pallbearers will be Bruce Maylee, Dale Maylee, Scott Meloy, Raymond Cross, Ethan Goodman and Earl Harry. Honorary pallbearers will be William Harry, Gary Younce, Elwood Ernest, William Asher, Carl Wilson and Robert O'Bryan. Memorial contributions are to family choice, with envelopes available at the Vienna office of Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.

He was born Oct. 21, 1943, in Maries County, a son of Ray William and June Jewel (Scott) Adkins. He served as a boiler technician in the United Stated Navy for three years. His ship was a key participant in the Bay of Pigs operation in 1962 and in the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. During his working life, he had worked at Marshall Habilitation Center as a maintenance supervisor. He was a proud member of Rader Methodist Church.

Those left to mourn his passing include his loving companion, Mary Humphrey of Dixon; one son, Dean Ray Adkins II and his wife, LaNette, of Centralia; eight sisters, Colleen Meloy of Vienna, Barbara King of Rolla, Alma Goodman of Dixon, Janice Baker of Portland, Ind., Shirley Garringer of Saratoga, Ind., Janet Vold of Whitehall, Mich., Janelle Randall of Round Lake Beach, Ill., and Jeanine Dunn of Fort Wayne, Ind.; four grandchildren, Dean III, Libby, Drew and Kyle; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mattie Mae Adkins; one brother, Carl Adkins; and one sister, Bobbie Bade.
