She was also known to go by the name "Marie" later in her life.
She married William G. Turpin on 8/31/1892 at Roane County, Tennessee. They had 9 children. According to daughter Edith, they divorced in 1917. Mattie did not ever remarry. Arkansas marriage records indicate William married for a second time to Minnie Prince on 8/2/1920.
After the divorce, Mattie's family struggled with a much troubled life. Mattie along with her children Fred, Edith, John, and eventually Houston and Charlie relocated to the Seattle, WA area where she became a proprietress of the Denny Way Hotel.
Her daughter Edith remained a loyal and loving daughter throughout her life. In a letter dated 11/18/1941 written to her Aunt Stella (Matttie's sister Stella Adams Russell), explaining the end is near, she writes: " Mother is in a hospital in Seattle. I held her in my arms night after night praying to God to make her well again. No one on earth could love a person like I do her. She is my everything."
