Robert was the only son of Calvin P. Adams and Emerine Cunningham Adams. His father died the same year he was born, of consumption. His mother married again in the next few years to David Carey
Robert was converted at the age of 14 years and joined the United Brethern Church at Saybook, Illinois. On July 8, 1866, at the age of 16 he married Martha Lyon at Breedsville, in Van Buren county in Michigan. Soon after their marriage they moved to McLean county, Illinois again and lived there for 6 or 7 years.
In October, 1873 they moved to Pittsburg in eastern Kansas. For the next forty years he and his family lived the life of a frontier minister. Once, during the drought years he received $25 as his total salary for the year. They apparently moved about a great deal. They were living in Elk county in south eastern Kansas when their 6th, 7th and 8th children were born. They were living in Hodgeman county, north of Dodge City and south of Ness City, when the last children were born, the twins in 1887.
He was licensed to preach by a quarterly conference at Union Center, Kansas in 1881 and joined the annual conference at Iola, Kansas in 1883. On April 22, 1889 the Oklahoma Indian Territory was opened to the homesteaders. It became a state in 1907. In 1896 Robert Adams located near Pawnee, Oklahoma some 40 miles northwest of Tulsa. He became a charter member of Oklahoma a conference at Eden Chapel, Payne county, the county south of Pawnee, on February 9, 1898 and was elected as one of the presiding elders at this conference. He served for four years. He traveled in a buggy drawn by two small ponies and would be away from home about eight months of the year. He organised many of the churches of the state.
In May 1901 he was a delegate to the General Conference at Fredricksburg, Maryland. In this same year they moved to Attica Kansas in Harper county where he was pastor for 1 1/2 years. Then they moved to a farm east of that town. In 1906 they moved to Holton Kansas to be near an academy for the children. On November 1, 1908 they moved to Crescent in Logan county, near Guthrie, Oklahoma as a pastor again, He returned to Kansas as Pastor of the Virgil United Brethern church, in Greenwood county in southeaster Kansas on October 5, 1915. In 1916 he returned to Attica, where he was living at the time of his death. It was here on July 8, 1916 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with all the living sons and their daughter present with their families. He died On March 3, 1919 at Attica Kansas and was buried in the City cemetery there.

Father Adams lived an active, useful life and died a peaceful, triumphant death. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. A. W. Cortner assisted by Rev. A. M. Scovill and Rev. J. L. Burkett. The body was borne to the grave by his six sons. A fitting close to so good a life.
He sleeps in sweet sweet repose awaiting a glorious resurrection.
