ARCADIA —


Ava Mae Adams, 87, of rural Arcadia died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at her home.

Mrs. Adams was born Nov. 12, 1924, at rural Arcadia the daughter of A.H. and Alta M. Farmer Spurling. Ava Mae was a homemaker and retired school teacher who lived in rural Arcadia most of her life. She was raised in rural Arcadia and attended Cato Grade School and graduated from Arcadia High School. She attended Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University, and graduated with a degree in teaching. She taught at Cato, 3rd grade at Pittsburg and Girard, and substituted at Fort Scott. She loved decorating, cooking, and painting. She married Robert L. "Bob" adams on June 5, 1960, at the Arcadia Christian Church. Mr. Adams preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 2009. She was a member of the Arcadia Christian Church, she attended Arma United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Arcadia Senior Citizens. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Walter L. Spurling of girard, Johna Carol Bever of Farlington, Rebecca Lynn Weatherby of California, and Gwendolyn Mae McFarland of Kansas City, Kansas, sister-in-law, Carolyn Spurling of Girard, and Gerald Junior Montee, Kevin Montee, and Gail Montee, who Bob and Ava Mae considered their own. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, infant James R. Spurling and John L. Spurling.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at the Arma United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glen Duderstadt officiating. Burial will be in the family mausoleum at the Old Arcadia Cemetery near Arcadia. Friends may call 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma. The family suggests memorials to the Old Arcadia Cemetery or the Arma United Methodist Church. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, KS 66712.
