Judge Ronald Fletcher Adams, 88, died at his home on September 30, 2003, surrounded by his family.
He was born in 1915, in Hortense, GA, the son of Alvah Ray Adams and Nora Middleton Adams.
Judge Adams graduated from Jesup High School and attended Middle Georgia College. He graduated from the University of Georgia Law School in 1940.
Judge Adams was commissioned a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 1941 and served on active duty through 1945. He participated in the campaigns at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received at the Battle of Bloody Ridge on Guadalcanal, and the Bronze Star with a "V" for action at Iwo Jima.
Judge Adams practiced law in Jesup from 1946 until 1961 and in Brunswick from 1961 until 1978. He served as Judge of the State Court of Wayne County from 1949 through 1952, and as Judge of the State Court of Glynn County from 1978 through 1992. While Judge of the State Court of Glynn County, he worked to develop the alternative service program to permit offenders to perform community service projects for the benefit of the public in lieu of serving time in jail.
Judge Adams served in the Georgia Senate from 1967 through 1972.
Judge Adams was a member of many civic and other organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, the Elks Club, the VFW, the American Legion, the Masons, the Shriners, Gridiron, and the Marine Corps League.
He was a founding member of the "Keep Glynn Beautiful" Committee. He was a member of the State Bar Association and served on its Board of Governors. He also was a member of the Escorts Club, the Oglethorpe Club in Savannah, and the Commerce Club in Atlanta.
Judge Adams was a member of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry. He previously served on the Board of Stewards of the First Methodist Church in Jesup.
Judge Adams married the late Deborah Douglas of Savannah in 1948. She died earlier this year.
He is survived by their children, a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Robert Rabbino of New York City; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald M. and Mary Adams of Brunswick, and Douglas and Ginger Adams of St. Simons; eight grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters and a brother: Claire O'Quinn of St. Simons; Wilma Weissenburger of Greenville, NC (formerly Brown of Brunswick); Maxine Adams of Hortense; Jean Walker of Jesup; and Grayson Adams of Rockville, Maryland. His devoted caregiver, Phillis Garret, also survives.
Visitation will be at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home on Friday, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Funeral service will be at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Saturday, at 11:00 a.m.
Burial to follow at Christ Church Frederica Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews and great-nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Marine Corps League.
