Arilla was the daughter of Ambrose Adams and Sarah J. Waterhouse (nee Kyle), who married on the 4th of July in 1871 in Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana. It was a second marriage for Sarah. She had previously married Austin M. Waterhouse on 23 Feb 1860 in Butler Co., Ohio. She brought two daughters to this new marriage--Mary M. (b. 1861) and Anna B. (b.1864). It is unclear what happened to Sarah's husband Austin.

Ambrose and Sarah welcomed daughter Sarah circa 1872 and daughter Mary Arilla in 1876.

I found the family in 1880, living in Center Township, Plymouth, Marshall County Indiana, where Ambrose was farming for a living. Sarah, aged 37, was home with Sarah, aged 8, Rilla, aged 2, and Anna (Waterhouse), aged 16. I found a marriage record for Sarah's older daughter Mary Waterhouse to David I. Rupp on Christmas day 1884 in Marshall County.

On 9 Jan 1898, Arilla married Arthur James Phillips in Marshall County. On 16 Feb 1899, the couple welcomed daughter Lois Edna. I couldn't find them on the 1900 Census. Best guess is that they were in Plymouth somewhere. Circa 1908, they welcomed son James to the family.

Arilla would have gotten the sad news of her mother's death in 1909.

I was able to find the family in 1910, living in Plymouth, where Arthur, aged 36, was working as a machinist. Arilla, aged 31, reported that she had had two children and that both had survived to that census. Indeed, home with her were Lois, aged 11, and James, almost 2.

On his 1918 WWI registration card, Arthur described himself as of medium height and slender build, with hazel eyes and black hair. He gave his address as 613 Pearl Street, and reported he was working as a machinist for A.B. Clyde (best guess, hard to read).

When the 1920 Census was enumerated, the family was still at the 613 Pearl Street address. Arthur, aged 46, gave mechanic at a manufacturing company as his occupation. Rilla, aged 41, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were daughter Edna, aged 20 and working as a telephone operator, and son James, aged 11.

The 1930 Census still had them living on Pearl Street in Plymouth. Arthur, aged 55, was a mechanic for an auto trailer (hauler?). Rilla, aged 51, was home with son James, aged 21. Lois appeared to have wed, married name Lees.

On 9 Jan 1937, Arthur and Arilla would have celebrated their 39th wedding anniverstary. Death parted the couple that year, Arilla departing this earth at age 60 or 61. Arthur lived another eighteen years before being laid to rest at her side in June of 1955. He was 81 years old.

Buried next to Arthur and Arilla are Arilla's parents on one side and son James on the other. Next to James is a marker for a Dorothy V. Phillips (1911-1991), likely James' wife.
