Gerald Cully Adams, age 93, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, in Columbia. He was born in Hartville, Wright County, Missouri on July 6, 1921, son of the late Robert F. and Olivia Moss Adams.
Known as Jerry, he was a graduate of Hartville High School and attended Missouri State University. Jerry served in the United States Navy as Chief Yeoman on the staff of Fleet Admiral C.S. Nimitz from 1942 until 1946. He served aboard the USS St. Louis from May 1941 until May 1942. He was stationed in Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor, managing to escape from the harbor during the bombing.
On August 3, 1943 Jerry married Catherine Eads, who preceded him in death on March 2, 1999. Jerry and Catherine spent their working years in St. Louis where they were members of Third Baptist Church and avid Cardinal fans. Jerry was also a member of the Pride of the West Lodge No. 179 AF&AM, St. Louis. He retired after 32 years with the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis, which owned and operated Union Station.
In 1999, Jerry relocated to Columbia to be near his nieces. He became an active member of the Columbia Friday Night Dinner Dance Club and USA Dance, Inc. He loved ballroom dancing lessons and the MU basketball games. He attended First Baptist Church in Columbia and was a favorite at Schnuckís. He had a heart filled with rhythm, love, and kindness.
Jerry is survived by two sisters-in-law, Betty Eads of Columbia and Pauline Pope Eads of Hurst, Texas; and eight nieces and nephews, Jim Adams of Newport Coast, California, Jack Atwill of Miami Lakes, Florida, Karen Atwill of Columba, Robert Eads of Hurst, Texas, Judy Elliott of Columbia, Susan Hutchinson of Eureka, California, Mary Lou Peterson of Hawaii, and Peggy Ward of Melbourne, Florida.
In addition to his wife, Catherine, he was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene and Robert Adams; one sister, Mabel Kelly; and one sister-in-law, Mildred Adams.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 12, at Iberia Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date at First Baptist Church in Columbia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of the donorís choice.
