Joe R. Adams, 67, of Stockton, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, in his home surrounded by loved ones, after a battle with mesothelioma cancer.
Joe was born Dec. 30, 1940, in Plad, Mo., to the late Jerome and Iva Adams.
On Nov. 25, 1959, he married Barbara Hankey in Buffalo, Mo. Together they had two children, Brent and Bylinda.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; son, Brent Adams of Alameda, Calif.; daughter, Belinda and husband, Ron Edwards, of Bolivar, Mo.; four grandchildren, Brittani Viggers and husband, Joey, of Bolivar; Stephanie Mangone and Tiffani Mangone of Bolivar, and Matthew Adams of Walnut Creek, Calif; and one sister, Barbara Nevils and husband, Lawrence, of West Plains, Mo.
After graduating from Windyville High School in 1958, Joe furthered his education at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar; North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C.; and Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
Joe joined the United States Navy in 1960 and served our country during the Cold War and fought in Vietnam and Desert Storm. He retired after 32 years of service as a commander in 1996.
Joe felt called into the Gospel ministry and served as pastor in Indiana, Hawaii and Missouri. He also worked at Airlessco by Durotech in Moorpark, Calif. for 12 years and retired to Missouri in 2003.
He will be greatly missed but we take comfort in knowing that our separation is only temporary and we will unite with him again in heaven.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, in the Montgomery-Viets Chapel with the Rev. Lawrence Nevils officiating.
Music was by Ron Maupin who played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes and "Potter's Wheel," "Wayfaring Stranger," I'll Fly Away," and "Daddy's Hands."
Casketbearers were Ron Edwards, Ben Franklin, Brent Adams, Charlie Ballard, Bill Wilson and Ralph Kenniston.
Burial with military rites by Navy personnel and Galmey VFW Post No. 9638, were in New Hope Cemetery.
